清代蒲松龄的《日用俗字·序言》说:“每需一物,苦不能书其名。旧有《荘农杂字》,村童多诵之。无论其脱漏甚多,而即其所有者,考其点画,率皆杜撰。故立意详查《字汇》,编为此书。”全书根据明代字书《字汇》,将百姓日用而不知其如何书写的方言俗语词记录下来。要准确解释这些用汉字记录的方言俗语词很不容易,但如果能在利用传统文献资料的基础上聊系现代方言来考察,有些词的意思便能够得到解释。
