米兰遗址由于其位于古丝绸之路的交通要道上,因此有较为交错的人文环境,反映在壁画中,则是让米兰壁画作为公元3世纪佛教初传时期的作品,从内容到形式上,以及壁画的表现技巧和造型方式,都充分体现了多种文化交融的历史情况。其中最为鲜明的就是在古希腊罗马文化影响下的犍陀罗艺术表现形式。有学者也根据提它的怯卢文题记认为米兰壁画的作者是受过罗马绘画训练的具有犍陀罗修养的贵霜画家,画家的这种知识结构和审美观念也是使米兰壁画呈现多种文化融汇的重要因素。
