全国现有二百多个城市,百分之九十以上的城市已建有公共交通设施。建国三十八年来,城市公共交通的结构是以公共汽车为主的。据据111个城市的统计,1985年末有各型公共汽车33700多辆,其中26个城市还有无轨电车4500多辆,4个城市设有轨电车320辆,以上合计公共交通车辆超过38520辆。另外,北京、天津两市还有地铁。同时,各城市还有大量的出租汽车和机关、企业、团体的小客车。有些城市水上公共交通还设有轮渡。仅以上三万三千多辆公共汽车,1985年全年消耗汽油和柴油约40万(吨);四千五百多辆电车全年消耗电能2.5亿(瓩时)。城市交通的能源消耗在各城市的总能耗中所占的比重已不容忽视。
