Compared to traditional independent R&D innovation, internal R&D, and open innovation, the search for external knowledge sources and the emphasis on non-R&D innovations are effective innovation transformation strategies. Based on the inter-provincial panel data of China’s high-tech industries from 2009 to 2014, the external knowledge source and non-R&D innovation path characteristics, regional heterogeneity and development trend of the high-tech industry were systematically analyzed, and the impact mechanism of the patent output on the high-tech industry was empirically examined. . The research results show that the high-tech industry in the eastern region has far more resources for external sourced and non-research and innovation activities than in the central and western regions, while the expenditures on external R&D expenditures and non-research and innovation for high-tech industries in the western region and the northeast region are significantly higher than those in the eastern region. In the central region, regional heterogeneity is significant, and there are differences in spatial distribution activities. High-tech industries, through external knowledge sources and non-research and innovation, have a significant positive impact on patent output as a whole, and need to attract sufficient attention and use. At the present stage, the synergistic driving effect between external knowledge sources, non-research and innovation and internal research and development of China’s high-tech industries is insignificant or weak negative, and the positive synergy effects of diversification and effective innovation paths have not been fully realized. The study provides an effective reference for high-tech industries to optimize the allocation of innovative resources and explore unique and effective diversified innovation paths.
