本文分析了震级混乱的主要原因是震级没有一个绝对标度论述了建立地震震级绝对标度的必要性与可能性。捉出一种建立震级绝对标度的办法:即利用地震矩张量M_(αβ)的第二坐标不变量I_2的绝对值开根(|I_2|)~(1/2)=M_0。这样建立的绝对标度有以下优点1、物理意义清楚,本质上反映了破裂的规模,在位错情形M_0=G△uS,2、不依赖于观测地区,仪器、和台基,它是一个绝对的力学量。3、不存在饱和问题,对极大的地震和极小地震甚至岩石样品中的微破裂都有定义。4、对深震亦有定义。5、由于它是一个绝对力学量,所以可以把全世界测定的震级统一起来,并且可以检验各家测定震级的优劣。6、若用M_w=2/3logM_0-10.7作为震级系统的定义,则这样定义的矩震级系统能和过去使用的Ms和M_L衔接起来,因此也便于使用过去的资料:
