After prinning on my volunteer badge.I settleddown into my weekly routine at a local nursinghome setting up Pokeno games,wheeling residentsonto the veranda,and reading newspapers to theresidents.At first,I did not expect my volunteerwork to make much of a difference because it wasall very simple tasks that anyone could do.However,as I spent more and more time at thenursing home,I began to see how much the seniorsappreciated me for just being there with them.Ilistened to their stories.I asked them about theirday.I took them on walks.The number of timesthese seniors will grasp my hands to thank meprofusely is very touching.They are lonely.Theirchildren have provided for them well with the bestnursing home facilities complete with healthy meals,comfortable living conditions,and a close medicalstaff,but they are missing the feeling of a family.
