梵语借词“阿弥陀佛”本是指称无量佛的专有名词。因经常出现在会话程式语“南无阿弥陀佛”中而逐渐演变为后者的截略式。“南无阿弥陀佛”在不同语境中可以表示“皈依阿弥陀佛”、“向阿弥陀佛致敬”、“阿弥陀佛救我”等不同的会话含义。这使得其截略式“阿弥陀佛”语用化为表示忏悔、感谢、庆幸、责备、感叹的程式语。“阿弥陀佛”向会话程式语的语用化是语言使用的经济原则、说话人的语用创新、听话人的语用推理、语用模仿和语言使用风格在语言社团内的扩散与传播这几股力量互动的结果。
