报刊是晚清小说戏曲禁毁史料的首要载体。晚清报载小说戏曲禁毁史料的形式可分为禁毁令章、新闻舆论和查禁报道三种,而以新闻舆论为主要特色,并且新闻舆论还直接参与了晚清小说戏曲禁毁活动;晚清报载小说戏曲禁毁史料来源广泛,记载较详尽,内容新旧杂陈,较全面地反映了晚清文学艺术在社会转型过程中所体现的守旧与新变、冲突与融合的发展历程。晚清报载小说戏曲禁毁史料具有多方面的文献价值,诸如可以补充现有小说戏曲目录之遗漏、厘清清代小说戏曲的同书(剧)异名现象、获知晚清一些艺人的演出信息、了解晚清违禁小说戏曲的审罚过程和特点、钩稽晚清地方戏的演变历程、梳理中国近现代文艺管理制度萌芽的轨迹、丰富中国近代文艺理论资料等。数量可观、内涵丰富的晚清报载小说戏曲禁毁史料可以深化和拓展晚清文学艺术及社会文化的相关研究。
