His name is little known in our country and his work has never been published in my country. On October 8, he got the news of this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature. Even many people in the circle of foreign literary studies in Beijing felt dazed and did not know who he was. The Nobel Prize winner of the “dark horse,” is a black poet and playwright Derrick Walcott from a small island on the Caribbean Sea. In deciding to grant the Nobel Prize for Literature to the Caribbean writer, the Swedish School of Arts said he “created glorious poems with historical imagination rooted in multiple cultures.” The rich and complex elements of his life experience in the Caribbean, the influence of English culture and the kinship in Africa are his “source of inspiration for fruitful creations.” Walcott was born in 1930 in Castries, the capital of the former British colony of St. Lucia. His father is British, his mother is a native, both love drama. When Little Walcott and his twin brother, Roderick, were just a year old, his father died, leaving behind a large
