夏承焘在20世纪50年代后期对杜诗有过较为集中的研究,《杜诗札丛·儒学与文学》是其成果之一。他强调要区别对待杜诗中提到的“儒”这个词的含义,不能都抽象地理解为指儒家思想,更不能据此来断定杜甫有儒家思想。夏承焘对这一问题的讨论,以及整个杜诗研究工作的进行,都受到当时特定的学术时潮的影响,反映出他在努力适应并合理调整自己的学术研究,但仍很好地秉持着严谨的学术方法,保持了纯正的学术品格,虽预时潮,而不失其正。这使得他的杜诗研究不但在具体看法上,而且在研究方法与品格上都给后人以重要的启示。
Xia Chengtao had a relatively concentrated study of Du Fu in the late 1950s. “Du Fu’s poetry, Confucianism and literature” is one of its achievements. He emphasized that to differentiate the meaning of the word “Confucianism” mentioned in Du Fu can not all be understood in abstract terms as referring to Confucianism, nor should it be concluded that Du Fu had Confucianism. Xia Chengtao’s discussion of this issue and the progress of the research on Du Fu’s poetry were influenced by the particular academic trend of the time, reflecting his efforts to adapt and rationally adjust his own academic research but still maintaining his rigorous rigor Academic methods, maintaining a pure academic character, although the pre-wave, without losing its course.
