A high yield assay for clonal receptor pharmacology was introduced. Many receptors are transiently co-expressed with the marker enzyme beta-galactosidase in NIH3T3 cells. Receptors that induce cell proliferation have a selective and potentiating effect on the cells that express the marker enzyme and thus the ability of a ligand to alter receptor activity can be reflected by changes in enzyme activity. The authors used this method to detect one of five cloned human medications
