集装箱运输是世界范围内方兴未艾的一种现代化运输方式,它具有保证货物安全、简化节约包装,提高装卸效率,加速车辆周转.便于组织“门到门”运输和各种运输方式联运等优点,是传统货物运输方式不可比拟的。集装箱运输是铁路三大运输方式之一,是铁路运输的发展方向和必然趋势,也是运输走向现代化管理的标志。随着集装箱运输的迅猛发展,繁重的手工操作已适应不了运输生产的需要。为促进我国铁路集装箱运输的技术进步,由铁道科学研究院运输所主持完成的铁道部“八五”铁路科技进步规划12个重大科研和推广项目之一《我国铁路集装箱发展政策和系统
