《关雎》一诗,自来难得确解。历代研究者的解释颇为纷纭,其中以《关雎》为刺诗的说法,最惹人注意。大致说来,《关雎》“刺诗说”又可分为两种:一为刺商纣之政说,一为刺康王晚朝说。以下分别言之。一刺商纣之政说的代表为魏源和章太炎两家。魏源《诗古微·四始义例》曰:“是齐、鲁、韩皆以《关雎》为思贤妃之德,与毛《序》‘后妃之德’有以异乎?无以异乎?彼昏日富,妇言是听之人,九侯、鄂侯不能争,比干、箕子不能悟,计无复之,而望及窈窕好逑琴瑟之默助,其意弥曲,其词弥恻,其告弥忠,长言之不足,故咏叹之矣。彼言刺晏朝者,得其流而未溯其源;言文
