Mauritius is a small country with a small population and a lack of natural resources. The production materials and consumer goods needed are basically dependent on imports. All mechanical and electrical products need to be imported. With the steady development of Mao’s national economy, imports of mechanical and electrical products accounted for an annual increase in the proportion of imports, an increase of 32%, far higher than the total increase in imports (19%). In 1996, the import value of mechanical and electrical products was 416 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 20% of the gross import value, of which mechanical products were 186 million U.S. dollars, electrical equipment was 140 million U.S. dollars, and vehicles and transportation tools were 0.90 billion U.S. dollars.
