晚唐李肇有“贞元之风尚荡”的说法。陈寅恪等先生认为中唐时出身于庶族的进士阶层浮薄放荡、不通经术、不守礼法。然而“尚荡”的主体并不单纯是庶族进士而应包括所有贞元时初露头角的举子和初入官场的官员。“贞元之风尚荡”包括学术思想的自由、速功思想、人格上的平等意识、刻意的耿介其行以及创作上的坦荡真率等多层含义。贞元士人的“荡”来自于对自身学识、修养、人生目标等的自信和拯时济弊的社会责任感。
