NASA launched a series of high-energy astronomical observatories (HEAO) satellites in the late seventies for a total of three satellites to study high-energy radiation such as x-rays and cosmic rays. According to NAS officials, all three satellites are “very good” jobs, sending important data within a few years. The HEAO-1 satellite, launched in August 1977 and working for 17 months, entered the Earth’s atmosphere in January 1979. Although it completed the initial exploration mission within the design life of the satellite in February 1978, space exploration continues until the satellite depleted control system gas in January 1979. During the entire seventeen-month exploration, it plotted the entire x-ray source in space, increasing the known celestial x-ray source from 350 to 1500
