【Abstract】As is well known, interest is the best teacher and it can cause motivation. "Motivation is what moves the students from boredom to interest, It’s something like engine and steering wheel of an automobile . "(Spolsky. B. 1989 ) So I decided to adopt some different kinds of games in my lessons to arouse the learners’ interest and motivate them , and help them keep up their English learning.
【Key Words】 Phonetic revision through games
Ⅰ.Phonetic revision through games
The students always feel it difficult to understand and remember many rules of pronunciation . This time , I organize some games , let them realize the characteristic of the rules of pronunciation
Example : Listening phonetic relay race .Purpose: to find the way to understand and remember the rules of vowel pronunciation. Instruction: First I say a word "good" , then get the students say the words and write the words that contain the same vowel. Such as book, look , food and so on .If one keeps silent or repeats the same word as others ’ , his / her group will lose a mark . Then get the students to observe the characteristic of the form of the words in each group carefully and guide them to understand and remember the rules of their vowel pronunciation .( those shown above on the right.)After the game most of the students said they could understand and master the rules of pronunciation easily .
Ⅱ.Vocabulary teaching and revision by games
For the students of the first year, the biggest problem is vocabulary. Teaching and reviewing vocabulary with games can motivate students and make them learn and use English with interest.
Example :Teaching new words by guessing games. When teaching the new words " Sunday , noise , season ", I make up the following riddles and let the students guess : 1. A day is the one that has a sun .( Sunday )2 . The son of the sea .( season ).As soon as the students heard that I let them do this game , they were interested in it .I gave them only a little hint. They could give the right answer . They could also remember the new words unconsciously while playing the game. When they want to use the words in the future, they can write them out easily as long as they think of the riddles.
Ⅲ.Use games to train listening
My students are very weak in listening . If the students only listen to the text and the teacher , which is what I used to do, they can hardly be motivated and the listening skill will be difficult to improve . When the games were applied, the situation was changed.Example : When the students do Ex.3 , WB1 Lesson 15 , I got them to do it by the game "Polly says "Explain to the students that I say Polly says, they must obey the instruction. If I don’t say Polly says they must not do anything ! Those who make a mistake must sit with their arms folded until the game is over .The last students standing win . While playing the game , all the students had to listen carefully in order to translate the sounds they had heard into body movement . Humor and playfulness were part of these activities as well . So the students was very interested in listening without worried or nervous . Ⅴ.Conclusion
This paper is the result of the action I conducted at the beginning of October, 2003, which aimed at arousing and motivating the students through games, which was assumed to be capable of cultivating motivation in middle school learners. In order to solve the identified problem, several solutions were implemented during the action research. Data collected from questionnaires and examination shows that games can help arouse and motivate middle school learners in the learning of phonetic ,vocabulary, dialogue, even concepts, which contributes to the students’ academic record.
Classroom teaching is one of the main way to accomplish English teaching task. Whether the teacher accomplish the task well depends on successful classroom teaching . How to improve classroom teaching more efficiency by games or other methods is what I will continue to probe.
