SKF Steel Works Engineering will build a plant that uses plasma technology to recover valuable metals from soot produced from steel-making baghouses. The plant will cost about 26 million U.S. dollars and it will be built in Langzcruckl, in the southwestern suburbs of Sweden. The plant mainly serves Scandinavian steel mills but is also capable of handling soot from European mills in the European continent with a capacity of 70,000 tons per year. Smoke from steel mill filters contains iron, zinc, nickel, chromium and molybdenum. To date, they are usually sent to the waste dump, where they are leached from the waste dump into the groundwater. The plasma soot process for the Langzcruckworks is evolved from SKF’s plasma ironmaking process. The plasma generator used in this method, a model developed for the temperatures experienced by the nasal cones and heat shields of a U.S. simulated spacecraft, has been used by the metallurgical reduction process.
