The complement system is activated by two pathways, one being activated by a series of sequential reactions of the traditional pathway, C_1 to C_9, and a series of reactions, C_3 to C_9, on the other pathway. Marak and others report ocular inflammatory diseases, especially corneal ulcers and uveitis, both of which are involved. Mondino et al. Have found several complement components in normal and keratitis patients and have suggested that these two pathways are associated with corneal ulceration, and Marak et al. Also point out that complement is associated with experimental allergic uveitis. By measuring complement in tear fluid, it was confirmed that there was no or little C_3 complement in the tears of normal or noninflammatory ocular patients, and a high complement of tears in the anterior segment inflammation patients. The authors modified the method for the determination of C_3, and measured the content of C_3 in 18 normal subjects and 42 patients with ocular diseases.
