Electronic systems often require low cost, small size, multi-functional assemblies. This article will describe a 4GHz all-monolithic receiver that can be used as an integrated circuit assembly for a variety of microwave systems. The monolithic receiver is made on a 1.6mm-2 GaAs chip, which includes a first-order double-balanced mixer and a fifth-class RF amplifier. Figure 1 shows that a lot of savings can be achieved when making a hybrid circuit into a monolithic circuit. The successful development of monolithic receivers provides designers of microwave circuits with the convenience of knowing in advance the performance and benefits of integrated circuits when designing digital and low frequency analog circuitry. As shown in Figure 2, monolithic receivers are fabricated on undoped GaAs liquid-crystal epitaxial wafers using selective ion implantation
