Arteannuin E was synthesized from methyl β-epoxy arteannuinate by treatment withformic acid followed by hydrolysis and lactonization.Methyl a-epoxy arteannuinate or methyl α-epoxy dihydroarteannuinate treated with formic acid did not produce the trans-diaxial product.
