农民爱不爱看话剧?其说不一。一九八二年我院创作演出了七场话剧《三十六任队长》,这个戏多数是在乡间的野台子演出,每场观众都有几千人,连续上演七十三场。通过为农民演出,我们开阔了视野,打消了疑虑,也使农民认识了话剧,他们说:“欢迎话剧再到乡下来!”《三十六任队长》没有什么离奇的情节,它以风俗画的格调,反映三中全会前后一个生产队的变化。剧本是写一个宗族间勾心斗角的落后队,“耕地找不到牛,干部选不出头”。他们有个老规矩,队长由各户出人“轮流坐庄”,三十五位“能”人轮流上过台,队还是照样穷。回乡知青李玉龙轮上了三十六茬队长,他一反常规,一扫旧俗,在搭班“组阁”中,
