Sweet cherry is the main precocious fruit cultivated in Japan. In 1978, the national cultivated area was 2850 hectares and the output was 15,900 tons. The most important cherry producing area in Japan is Yamagata Yamagata Yamagata Basin. The cultivated area in 1978 was 1,770 hectares with an annual output of 12,400 tons, accounting for 68.6% and 78% of the national total respectively.
