中国的翻译源远流长。最早的传译之事可上溯至西周之前。《礼记·王制》篇里载有:“中国,夷,蛮,戌,狄……五方之民,言语不通,嗜欲不同。达其志,通其欲,东方曰寄,南方曰象,西方曰狄鞮,北方曰译。”寄、象、狄鞮、译都是指通译言语的人。《周礼·秋官》篇说:“掌蛮狄诸国传谕言辞,而属秋官司寇”,“通夷狄之言者曰象胥。”“象胥”即指当时四方译官。东汉时,佛经的翻译曾被广泛认为是中国文字翻译之滥觞,但据梁启超查考,战国的《越人歌》当是中国最早的译品。《越
