近代语言变革运动,看上去是对自身文化的一次重大调整,但其潜在逻辑,仍来自于儒家思想赋予的旧思路,即:从政治事功的层面来评价文化价值的高低,要求文化为国运负责。近代语言变革运动的领导者们,希望通过语言变革而全面更新文化,最终通过建设与西方现代文明全面接轨的新文化,直接开出一个强大、进步的现代中国。文化变革,成为谋求中国问题之根本解决的根本方案。这种幻想,与儒家经典提供的政治神话极其相似。近代语言变革运动,虽然引爆了五四以来全面的文化重建运动,但究其实质,却依然以儒学传统赋予的文化功利主义为其基本理论前提之一。
