【摘要】意象派詩人受东方诗歌启发，放弃直接抒情的方式，他们通过具体意象使诗歌被读者理解而不直抒胸臆，不让自己的情感干预读者的阅读思考；诗歌里取材于自然的，现代都市的具体意象本身就能触发人的感官感觉，激发想象，让读者自己体会意象背后诗人要表达的情绪和态度，这样比直接抒情更有感染力。本文列举了一首中国元曲小令，一首日本诗歌和一首英语诗歌证明意象派诗歌的具体意象如何传递情感和表明态度。

【Abstract】Imagists make use of concrete images of natural or city scenes to attract readers senses of smell， taste， sight， and touch and arouse readers imagination and mood， and to show an attitude. They believe the images can explain the poetry and enable readers to understand it without noticing the poets during the process.

I. Introduction
According to Robert Penn Warren， poetry is concrete. Imagists are greatly influenced by eastern poems which stressed one leading image. The passage represents three poems to show how Imagists use concrete images to appeal to readers’ senses and thus arouse imagination. And then the readers’ mood was aroused and get to know an attitude.
II. Content
Poetry should be presented with concrete images.
Poetry is originally concrete . It appeals to our senses and arouses our imagination by giving us a deep impression of natural scenes. The senses of sights， sounds， smells， taste and touch are crucial in poetry and cause the readers to be filled with certain kind of mood.Poetry cannot be isolated from the world of senses or else it will becomes abstract， empty， and boring. Poetry arouses the readers’ imaginations by offering us objects， persons， and events， thus poetry elements should contain concrete images.
Imagists use concrete images to make the poems vivid.
The Imagists add vividness to poetry by building a relationship between its meanings and concrete images and let the reader understand the poem without exerting influences in the process. They believe that the poem should be able to speak for itself. The Imagists were influenced greatly by the eastern poetry that puts an emphasis on one leading image and use implication instead of direct statement.
Two eastern poems： images of natural scene and mood.
Here is a Japanese poem：
A crow is perched
Upon a leafless withered bough—
The autumn dusk.
Here is a Chinese tune：
Sunny Sand
Autumn Thoughts
Over old trees wreathed with rotten vines fly evening crows；
Under a small bridge near a cottage a stream flows； On ancient road in the west wind a lean horse goes.
Westward declines the sun；
Far， far from home is the heartbroken one.
Two poems use concrete images to arouse the readers’ mood . It’s apparent that the crow perched in the dusk of autumn on a withered bough indicates loneliness. Images properly chosen could arouse the reader’s imagination and express much more than a direct statement. The poet thus can stimulate our imagination and a connected mood.
An English poem： images of city life ， mood， and attitude.
Here is a short passage from John Gould Fletcher’s poem “Irradiations.”
Flickering of incessant rain
On flashing pavements；
Sudden scurry of umbrellas；
Bending recurved blossoms of the storm.
The scene is vivid： during the day sunshine and shower take turns to impress the readers because the the city streets are wet and “flashing.” Another shower has just begun， because the streets suddenly “blossom”， which means umbrellas are running automatically.
The scene is objective but it shows an attitude. There is an air of happiness. The poet compared umbrellas with blossoms. The scene arouses our senses of sight and smell， brings about imagination and mood， and shows an attitude.
III. Conclusion
Imagists have feelings but they try to arouse the readers’ imaginations and mood， and show an attitude. They achieve the goal by using concrete images from natural or city scenes. There is no need for the poets to interfering in the process during which the readers can be stimulated by the properly selected images. Therefore， even when poets use a statement or a logical argument，they usually provide readers with objects，scenes，and characters in action.
