迄今为止,杨宪益和戴乃迭夫妇的《A Dream of Red Mansions》和大卫·霍克斯与约翰·闵福德合译的《The Story of the Stone》是仅有的两种《红楼梦》全译本,也是当今海外流传最广的英文译本。笔者就两种译本中林黛玉和薛宝钗的金陵判词做一个简要的对比分析,探讨其对原作的声美、意美和形美的传递效果。
So far, “A Dream of Red Mansions” by Yang Xiangyi and Gladys and “The Story of the Stone” by David Hawkes and John Minford are the only two versions of A Dream of Red Mansions, It is also the most widely circulated English translation in overseas countries today. The author makes a brief contrastive analysis of the Jinling verdicts of Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai in the two versions, and discusses the transmission effects of the sound, the beauty and the beauty of the original.
