Western industry believes that in the communications satellite market, the size of the satellite is properly selected or not is a key factor in the operator’s profit. People tend to compare the unit cost of a small satellite transponder with the unit cost of a large satellite transponder. They consider that small satellites carry fewer transponders, have higher unit costs, and deploy smaller satellites in orbit than the large satellite. However, the situation can be quite different if another cost-comparison approach is adopted. When the demand for satellite transponders is high in the market, as large as 2/3 of the transponders for large satellites are rented, it may be cost-effective to operate large satellites from the investment recovery point of view. However, when the market is weak, most transponders will not be able to be rented out when large satellites are launched. In general, small satellites do not have such problems. Most transponders are rented out when the satellite is launched. A Western satellite consultant has made the following comparisons: 1. A large satellite weighing 3 tons, with a normal production cycle of 36 months and a capacity of 48 transponders, has a life expectancy of 15 years and an initial investment of 248 million U.S. dollars. With an annual recoverable amount of 488 million U.S. dollars; 2. Medium-sized satellites weighing about 1.5 tons, which have been manufactured for nearly 30 months and can carry 24 transponders, have a projected life expectancy of 12 years at a cost of 135 million U.S. dollars and an annual recovery of 36.6 million U.S. dollars ; 3. Small satellites, weighing 900 kg or less, have a production cycle of only 28 months and can carry 12 transponders
