本文以薇拉·凯瑟小说中大量运用的内嵌故事为研究对象,通过对其两部主要作品中波西米亚老人哈塔的故事、俄罗斯民间故事和纳瓦霍印第安人家园丧失和复得故事的分析,探究了其背后所蕴含的古老欧洲、美洲文明传统,并认为凯瑟借助内嵌故事揭示了美国西部地域文化与他者文化的紧密联系以及她对多元文化的接纳态度,打破了以往自我指涉的民族主义神话,体现了她包容他者的现代视野及对美国民族根源的深层追寻和多重建构。
In this paper, the embedded stories widely used in the novels of Vera Cather are taken as research objects. Through the story of Bohmeitha Hathata in two major works, the Russian folk tales and the loss and complexation of Indian homes in Navajo The analysis of the story explores the ancient European and American civilizations behind it and thinks that Caesar reveals the close connection between western American culture and other cultures and her acceptance of multiculturalism by means of embedded stories The self-referential myth of nationalism embodies her modern vision of inclusiveness and deep pursuit and multiple constructions of the nation’s roots.
