中药是指在中医理论指导下应用的药物。中药传统剂型是汤剂,是我国应用最早、最广泛的一种剂型,汤剂适应中医的辨证施治、随证加减的原则,具备简单易行、吸收快、能迅速发挥药效的优点。但是,汤剂也存在一些不足之处,如煎液体积较大、味苦,服用、携带不方便;易发霉、发酵、不能久贮;不宜大量制备,也不利于及时抢救危重患者等。因此,近年来广大中医药研究者对汤剂进行了有效的剂型改革,出现了如中药合剂、口服液、片剂、胶囊剂、颗粒剂、注射剂等,都是尽量保留汤剂药效,并在克服其缺点的基础上发展起来的中成药新剂型。然而,由于中药成分复杂,物质基础研究薄弱等原因,中成药的质量控制问题一直困扰着中药制剂的发展,影响着中药制剂现代化和国际化的进程。
