飞机有了智能蒙皮在未来的空战中即使不是决定优势也是一个主要优势。未来的战争环境,生存将不仅取决于已方所具有的最大限度的隐身能力,而且还取决于对付敌方飞机的隐身手段。智能蒙皮技术的出现对完成这两项工作均带来了极大的希望。目前,美空军飞机的蒙皮是惰性的,“蒙皮”比涂层结构的效果要差。当用智能蒙皮时,由于航空电子设备的功能可以潜藏在飞机表面中,因而使其在电气上更“灵活”,虽然制造这种智能蒙皮的技术还处于初期阶段,但是它却为军事航空电子设备的发展指出了一个新的方向。智能蒙皮,其概念起源于四年前所完成的空军工程预测Ⅱ中。这种智能蒙皮将设计成能以两种不同的方式工作。第一、飞机的智能蒙皮应减弱电子探测手段对飞机的“可观测性”。用被动和定向探测装置取代雷达和通讯网络。智能蒙皮可提高战术飞机的隐身能力,特别是还可以取消飞机的高“可观测性”的翼下吊舱和其他外部设施。
