中华民族拥有悠久的文化传统,在这片广袤的土壤上,经历了一切的艰难与曲折,采用独创性手法发展自己的文化。中国古代绘画是中华文化的绝妙之处,中国古代绘画不仅仅是我们眼睛所看到的内容与形象,更多的是画外之意。古代画论中,关于创作的画论自成体系,撰写画论的作者大多自身就是画家,他们所记述的文字就是自己绘画的构思,如东晋顾恺之的《画云台山记》、荆浩的《笔法记》,还有结合自身实践与前人绘画创作经验进行总结,如宋代郭熙、郭思的《林泉高致》。古代画论作者用古老的文字,不厌其烦的表述他们看画、作画、品画的角度及独特的审美追求。中国古代画论对传统中国画的实践具有指导意义,它穿越千年,延续至今。
