西氏长颈龟隶属侧颈龟亚目—蛇颈龟科—长颈龟属—西式长颈龟。根据化石记载,侧颈龟亚目的龟类出现在白垩纪。它们与曲颈龟亚目的龟类不同,不能将头部垂直缩入壳内,而只能将头颈侧向弯曲于背甲与腹甲之间,属于较原始的龟类。曾广泛分布于南北半球(我国境内发现的化石证明,蛇颈龟科的龟类曾经在中华大地上爬行过),现在仅残存2科15属70种左右,分布于南半球。
