罗大岡同志为了指导青年們正确認識克利斯朵夫这个人物,在1957年23期的“中国青年”上發表了一封給青年的公开信。我認为信中的論点有不少是欠妥当的。第一。不錯,我們有一部分青年看到了克利斯朵夫个人奋斗的途徑,在心中起了共鳴,于是在社会主义制度之下竞摒斥集体主义的精神而高唱“个性解放”和“絕对自由”,因而走入了歧路,有的甚至蛻变成了右派分子。但这只能說是他們心中原已存在着对現制度的不滿情緒,原有“自我扩張”的因素,所以不惜抽掉了克利斯朵夫所处的时代背景和全書的思想内容,而抓出来一个抽象的个人奋斗精神。我認为这个責任是不能嫁禍于“約翰·克利斯朵夫”这部書的。罗大岡同志虽然没有这样表示,但在这封信里都有意或無意地眨低了这部書的价值。罗大岡同志認为:“共产党宣言”既然發表于1848年,
