As a means of prolonging the sales of the apple market, modified atmosphere storage has long been established in most apple producing areas in the world. The current technical requirements for controlled-atmosphere storage provide good storage conditions of 6-8 months after the apple is harvested. As apple production has increased in most regions, most notably in Washington and France, it has been necessary to extend Apple’s sales period to 12 months. In order to ensure the quality of the fruits of the latter part of sales, several new gas-adjusting techniques have recently been developed.
