从著录体例的角度来看,《隋书·经籍志》集部采取了著“杂”于末的著录体例,亦即将整个集部之“杂”书著录于整个集部的末尾,也就是形式上著录在了总集类的末尾。以萧该《文选音》、刘勰《文心雕龙》等为界进行划分,可将整个总集类划分为两段:前段为其原本之总集,包括《文选音》、《文心雕龙》等在内的后段则为整个集部之“杂”书。据此可知:《隋志》原本之总集并不杂乱,所杂乱者只是著“杂”于整个集部之末的“杂”书;《隋志》所认为之总集,只包括那些与挚虞《文章流别集》类同,兼收诸体的集子,除此而外者均非总集;单一作者的作品及单篇作品,只是形式上著录于总集类中,其实质只不过是整个集部之“杂”书,与《隋志》原本的总集之间并无直接之联系,据之论述所谓的文学史意义等无实质的意义。研究古典目录相关问题,或利用古典目录研究相关问题必须充分注意到其体例上的特点。
