题材是指舞蹈作品中直接描写的生活现象。是舞蹈编导对其掌握的社会生活中的素材进行选择、提炼、加工后作为作品内容的材料。题材不同于素材，素材大多是社会生活的原始材料，具有无比的丰富性和原生性，但是缺乏系统性和规范性，犹如我们今天定义为“原生态舞蹈”的舞蹈样式，它是舞蹈作品的来源和基础。
