艺术是创作,同时也是消遣。对这两种见解,我认为艺术之成为消遣或人类精神的单纯的游戏,是比较重要的。虽则我很赞赏各种不朽的创作,无论是绘画、建筑或文学,可是我觉得真正艺术的精神如果要成为更普遍的东西,要侵入社会的各阶层,必须有许许多多的人把艺术当做一种消遣来欣赏,绝不抱着垂诸不朽的希望。每个大学生都有打网球或踢足球的平凡技术,是比大学生产几个可以参加全国比赛的体育选手更为重要的,同样地,每个儿童和成人都能够自创一些东西以为消遣,是比一个国家生产一个罗丹更为重要的。我认为只生产几个以艺术为职业的艺术家,还不如教学校全体学生塑造黏土的模型,同时使所有的银行行长和经济专家都能够自制圣诞贺卡。换一 Art is creative, but also pastime.
