British scholar DWM Harding found Jane Austen abominable to the mother, so in her no mother’s lovely place. And Austin’s abominations are modest. However, by systematically analyzing the images of mothers in the three masterpieces of Austin, such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, this article finds it inappropriate to describe Austin’s abhorrence toward mothers as having “moderation.” In fact, in these three masterpieces, Austin’s apathetic experience has undergone a process of evolution, from restrained, disguised disgust in “Sense and Sensibility” to unmistakable in Pride and Prejudice Catharsis, and ultimately to “Emma” in the mother’s complete indifference and neglect.
