在英语中,能表示“傻瓜”之意的词,除常见的 fool 一词外,还有 goose,gooseberry,loggerhead,looney,simpleton,pantaloon,dolt 等。笔者愿对这些“傻瓜”的来源作一上溯和拾趣,以飨读者。一、fool 傻瓜。源于拉丁语的 foolis。foolis 的本义是“风箱”(bellow),可引伸为“夸夸其谈的人”(windbag)之意,但拉丁语的 foolis 还有另一个意思。在人体上,也是拉丁语阴囊(scrotum)的名称。由于 scrotum 和坚果 nut 的外壳形状相似,美俚 nut 也作“傻瓜”解了,说某事是件蠢事时,常用的感叹语是 Aw,nuts!(噢,好蠢的事儿!)二、Goose 傻瓜。英美学生之间开玩笑,把作不出习题或回答不出老
