颜色是沉积物最直观的特征,有些海洋沉积物即以颜色来命名,如红粘土、兰泥、绿砂、黄褐细砂等.沉积物(或沉积岩)的颜色是它的成分、结构和形成环境的反映,因而早已引起地质工作者的注意.颜色也作为深海沉积物分层和对比的标志,因此研究它在理论和实践上均有重要意义.用孟塞尔色标(Munsell Scale)来描述海洋沉积物的颜色,国外自二次大战后已普及于海洋地质工作中,深海钻探的岩芯编录必须用此色标来描述.新野和埃默里曾用该色标对东海沉积物进行了观色,并编制出颜色分布图.本文在孟塞尔色标观色的基础上,试图对颜色的分布规律和成因进行探讨.
