The oil and gas drilling industry is the largest user of utility industrial minerals for drilling and well-formation, which are industrial minerals that have been applied due to their characteristics of use rather than their chemical composition. The use of industrial minerals in this industry involves complex mining, processing and product classification. At the wellsite, the cost of such products also reflects the complexity and service charges associated with particular remote areas. The total amount of practical industrial minerals used in the drilling industry is about 2.5 times the total amount of kaolin (3.3 million short tons) used in paper industry fillers and coatings. Drill fluid cools and lubricates drill bits to remove cuttings.
