Objective To investigate whether hypertension can cause brainstem auditory evoked potentials abnormalities and hearing impairment in elderly hypertensive patients. Methods Thirty elderly hypertensive patients with the disease course over 10 years were selected as experimental group and 30 normal subjects as control group. Application of brain stem potential evoked response recorder and audiometer to detect BAEP and hearing. Results The incidence of major wave in hypertensive patients was significantly lower than that in normal controls (P <0.01). The latency of Ⅳ and Ⅴ wave prolonged significantly (P <0.01), and the latency of Ⅴ wave latency was significantly longer than that of normal subjects (P <0.05). The incidence of deafness increased significantly (P <0.01) ). Conclusions This study demonstrates that hypertension can cause abnormalities of auditory brainstem auditory evoked potentials and also contributes to senile deafness.
