The number of blast furnaces in the United States has been reduced from 83 to 43 in the past 10 years. However, by using pulverized coal and natural gas, active blast furnace productivity increased by 25%. The director of the Institute of Industrial Economics at Fordham University in the United States recently published an investigation report on the recent changes in blast furnaces in the United States. The report reads as follows: The improvement of ironmaking technology in the US iron and steel industry will increase the productivity of blast furnaces and greatly contribute to environmental protection. The output of blast furnaces in active use is significantly higher than that of just a few years ago. The consumption of coke is greatly reduced, and it is now supporting 60% of iron materials used in steelmaking in the United States. However, coking needs to comply with environmental protection standards are increasingly approaching, the future existence of a stable blast furnace will not be guaranteed. By January 1, 1998, 90% of the total capacity of coke ovens in the United States must comply with the more stringent requirements of the Atmospheric Static Act (implemented in 1995). By 2003
