布袋戏的表演可分为前后场——前场由主演及助演组成,主演负责全场口白并操弄主要角色,助演协助主演操演部分戏偶,以及“捡场”与“赞声”;后场包括唱曲艺人与演奏乐器之乐师。布袋戏演出时,台上手艺高超的操偶师们在幕后,一面用手熟练地操纵戏偶,表演各种细腻的动作,一面还要模仿各种人物声调,先是出场诗,然后随着戏码的展开,他们开始绘声绘色地叙述剧情,配合着后场悠扬的音乐,一个个雕刻精美的戏偶在操偶师的灵活操作下显得活灵活现,逼真传神。有时也借助道具的配合。小小戏台,短短一出戏码却道尽了人间的悲欢离合与善恶美丑。
The performances of the puppet show can be divided into front and back fields. The front field is composed of starring and assisting performances.
