New Zealand officially started his space activities using International Telecommunications Satellite (Satellites) in late 1964. In April 1968, the first International Telecommunication Satellite Earth Station was built, which cost the equivalent of a submarine cable to Australia. Earth station antenna diameter of 30 meters, weighing about 377 tons, costing nearly 700 million US dollars, put into use in 1970. Using this earth station, New Zealand began receiving television programs relayed by Intelsat. The Wellington Multi-Technology Center uses this earth station to receive Pan Pacific educational programs and communications experiments broadcast by the United States Applied Satellite # 1. Wellington University used foreign satellites to study the ionosphere and recorded the effects of the ionosphere on communications.
