[Associated Press, Chicago, March 19, 1981] Japanese doctors invented a new method for delivering large doses of anti-cancer drugs directly to tumors. American doctors said that this method “has great potential”. Japanese doctors describe this technique in a issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association published today and call it “chemical embolism.” In another editorial editorial, the editor of the magazine said that this technology “proposes interesting concepts and has considerable potential in the treatment of cancer,” because this technology attacks tumors from two different pathways. Doctors at Akita University Medical School installed small doses of the toxic anti-cancer drug mitomycin in cellulosic sacs, which are small enough to pass through the bloodstream and stay in the immediate vicinity of the tumor.
