His masterpiece Call to Heaven is an example of Afro-American literature in the 1940s and 1950s. The careful description of characters in the novel infiltrates the author’s thinking on the issue of religious beliefs in blacks and the inquiry into the identity of blacks. John is a black teenager who constantly searches for identities. By analyzing the confusion, exodus and epiphany of John’s experiences in his growing up, this article explores novels from the angle of his novels and explores the more profound growth themes of his novels.
