In 1997, the Internet continued to mature, although it did not develop in the direction that experts predicted. The Internet has entered more and more homes and it has begun to generate considerable advertising revenue. However, trying to find out exactly what people want to see on the Internet still requires trial and error. By the end of 1997, about 18% of U.S. households had access to the Internet, up from 5 percent in 1996. According to a report from an authoritative research institute, by 2001 this figure is expected to rise to 38%. According to industry observers, the 17 million online homes on the Internet represent a big part of the Internet.
