The non-wood industry in the Philippines, especially the bamboo and rattan industry, has undergone great changes. In general, the decline in competitiveness is mainly due to the constraints of raw materials and labor costs. Relative to the timber industry, rattan production capacity and exports are declining. However, exports are still concentrated in the high-end market. Due to the growth of environmental awareness, the rapid development of ecotourism and the improvement of people’s purchasing power, more and more high-quality products are marketed in the Philippine market. The Philippines is still the major supplier of bamboo and rattan products in the world. Since this product is an important source of income for people and urban and rural workers in highland and forestry communities, it is necessary to work together to maintain the competitiveness of the bamboo and rattan industry in the global marketplace, the major challenges that these stakeholders and policy makers face. A comprehensive strategy should be adopted for these industries. Mainly include: the effective management of raw material supply, processing and market development for continuous research and development, from the government to the private sector through the entire value chain support system.
